thanks for your hint.
I found out that the live image is already mounted as a ro squashfs
device on
/lib/live/mount/rootfs/filesystem.squashfs.
This mount point is compatible with nfs (although the path is a little
bit long :) and the server now starts without complaining.

What about adding those directories directly on CD, outside of
compressed livesystem.

I would like to create a customized image which at boot exports two
directories via NFS.
But - as I found in the kernel docs - the used overlay unionfs is not
compatible with NFS. When I try to export the directories I get
"exportfs: does not support nfs export" Are there any workarounds
