I found out that the live image is already mounted as a ro squashfs
device on
/lib/live/mount/rootfs/filesystem.squashfs.
This mount point is compatible with nfs (although the path is a little
bit long :) and the server now starts without complaining.

But - as I found in the kernel docs - the used overlay unionfs is not
