I would like to suggest trying out "grandr", which is a graphical front-end
for xrandr. I have also used "arandr", which is another graphical
front-end, but it seems it is not available yet on lenny.

I do not have this notebook, but from what you are telling, could it
be a hardware problem? I mean, that the card is not correctly boot up
or powered and, thus, is not detected?
