When I made the transition (six or seven years ago) it was easy:
1. Attempt to upgrade Red Hat
2. Swear at system which will no longer boot.
3. Install Debian.
Hopefully Red Hat has improved since then, but I learned my lesson.

Note that these emails were addressed to the list. If you had actually
been unsubscribed, the message would have been from the listserver,
addressed to you. Someone's playing games; there is nothing to worry

I have a Compaq Presario 1070 with an Intel Pro/100 (not M, but
possibly similar) Cardbus II card and have also not found a driver
which works. I've looked at both the Intel and Scyld sites but can't
find anything helpful. Does anyone know if a Linux driver exists for
this card?

That's strange, 3c575_cb.c is contained in the pcmcia-source package.
Do you have the appropriate kernel-pcmcia-modules package installed?
You can install pcmcia-source and kernel source and create your own
modules package, if necessary.

zgv might be just what you are looking for (no X required). I say
"might", because it doesn't work with all SVGA video cards, however
with an older machine, the chances should be pretty good (although I
never have had very good luck with Compaq boxen):
