Thanks for responding; I decided to try replacing the Gnome Network manager with Wicd and so far so good -- it has not dropped the connection once. As a result I believe that the driver in the Lenny Kernel (2.6.26-1-686) works and there is no need to re-compile it with the Madwifi driver. For th
