Well, I filed a bug with Xorg.  Interesting, the versions in the Debian
repositories are way behind Ubuntu, excepting experimental.  However, I was
unable to install exp. because of dependency issues.  I'll keep you informed
if I hear anything.  I tried your suggestion; but, it evolved into a big
mess, so I backed out.  Thanks anyway.
