i'm trying to use alsa (alsa - alsa-base package) as my sound driver on
a Dell Inspiron 8600, but nothing works. I've even compiled a new kernel

Has anyone tried to compile a kernel newer than 2.6.8 and failed due to some
gamma_drv or gamma_drm error? I have seen a few posts in which people say
they compiled their own kernel so there must be a way of getting around that
gamma_drm problem. I have compiled 2.6.8 kernels but with more rec

I have an old laptop that does not have BIOS support for booting from cd. I
am wondering, is there some way to create a boot floppy that can be used to
find my CD drive, so that I can boot the debian installation from CDs?

Well, that's not exactly true.. make-kpkg will happily create an initrd
for you. apt-get install kernel-package

I had to disable
3dlabs GMX 2000 (CONFIG_GAMMA)
in order to compile kernel.org 2.6.10 using Debian's .config.

I have installed two old laptops that way, you can get the floppy images here:
http://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/testing/main/installer-i386/rc2/images/floppy/
It requires 3 floppies (boot, root and cdrom drivers) and the cd's .
It is prety self explanantory but if you need help just ask.
