I have ran into same problem with GC75 PCMCIA GPRS modem. Problem was in the
kernel config - try to enable whatever you find related to serial ports and
do not forget on "Non-standard serial port support". It works for me.
And if this won't help, please tell us more about your HW (modem) and typ

You're on a debian mailing list. If this problem happens on a system where
debian is installed, it may be a problem with gpm. Run gpmconfig again and
choose the appropriate PS/2 (and not 'P/S2') mouse for your system.
Eventually, it will work.

till now I have been using the -ac patches but alan seems to be inactive
at the moment and i havent found any for 2.4.23.
