In order to authenticate to my printer, I must enter a user account.
On my windows box, I share the printer to user "Guest", and then on the linux box I use
smb://Guest:@SERVERNAME/SHARENAME
You may wish to try with the guest account and the null password.
Hope it helps,
Dan

Thanks Mitch, I'll give that a try. I was wondering: would it would make
any difference if I used Tasksel and chose laptop system during the
installation. (I skipped over tasksel during my first installation
attempt, and now I'm gearing up for a second try.)

Hello World,
I have a Toshiba Satellite 2450 laptop and kernel 2.4.22 is the first of
the 2.4.x series that recognizes the ACPI in its BIOS.
Now I have the problem, which kernel options I should take. I'm
especially interested in the following options:
CONFIG_TOSHIBA
CONFIG_ACPI_TOSHIBA
CONFIG_A

I've been away from debian for a little while and am having a hard time
coming to terms with my wlan card.
I'm running the stock 2.4.21-5-i686 kernel on a Dell Inspiron.
I insert my Wlan card (Nortel/Symbol e-mobility), and the cardmgr loads
the orinoco and orinoco_cs modules and autoconfigures
