I am going nuts here, my laptop seems to need some strange mix between a
2.2 kernel and a 2.4 kernel.
When I boot with a 2.4 kernel(2.4.17, or 2.4.18) cardmgr recognizes my
network card just fine(3C574). But I can't get sound to work (non pnp
ES1878) even with alsa, even with disabling isapnp(whic

I've had great luck with ThinkPads in the past. They are quite expensive,
however, but if that's not a factor. The T-23s have some sort of titanium cover
that makes them 'more resistant', although train hopping probably isn't quite
what IBM had in mind when making them.
