I see. I guess I just have not run across the programs that need it.
However, I've recompiled pcmcia many times without the link, so that
is not one that needs it.

hi,
many other projects expect the kernel sources in /usr/src/linux - so if
you compile e.g. pcmcia or alsa you definitely need the link (or need to
call the folder "linux" which is not too good because then you never know
which version you have there, at least not at the first sight.

This and later message from someone else say to create a symbolic link
to kernel-source-. Why? AFAIK, it is unnecessary. (Or, I am
blissfully ignorant of something.) If the below were modified by
removing the "ln -s" line and changing the "cd linux" to "cd
kernel-source-" it would all work just

debs,
i appreciate all advice/hints given. unfortunately, ...still no
pcmcia modem . after recompling the kernel and card services, i get
a boot but nothing for my modem, which was very "happy" from a potato install,
but cannot be recognized after the custom kernel process.
i was really hoping

I have some time on my hands, so I am busy getting PCMCIA to work on my new
Acer travelmate 512T with O2Micro OZ6832/6833 Card Bus Controller .
I'm running a Slink system. I downloaded the 2.2.10 kernel source and baked
a new kernel (took six minutes), installed it and it worked.
