then do the dist-upgrade.

Did you change your /etc/apt/sources.list file? You have to make sure
that Sarge sources are included.
Try something like this and then run dist-upgrade again:
# Woody / Stable
deb ftp://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/ stabl

"Testing" is what will become sarge.
Then "apt-get update" and "apt-get upgrade" bring you up to speed.

1. make sure you either have the cds or the relevent lines for ftp/http in
your sources.list in /etc/apt/
(goes for cd-access as well).
2. do apt-get update
3. do apt-get dist-upgrade -u
