Just to let you know the simple solution I've found to make vesa work with
custom 2.6.12 kernel (see this thread: for more details:

It seems that the vesafb support should be compliled in as a module and be
loaded manually int

obviously udev-0.068-2 forces me to update to 2.6.12. As the stock
kernel linux-image-2.6.12-1-386 does not support CPU freq scaling, I had
to compile my own kernel again (with the old config).
