What is contents of /etc/nsswitch.conf?
Is computer configured to use DNS for name lookups?

I can't imagine that you can't do a straight(startup/install) boot from the
CD, so going on from that assumption:
Boot frm CD into install
exit to shell
fsck primary linux part(hda2?) - if that's usable go on, if not your
DOA-SOL
make mount point ( I use /tmp/root or t

I've had the same problems on a 760EL, never really got it fixed, but use the
boot from dos so far. Sorry I can't help more, but work gets in the way of fun.
