arts locks the sound system. When I use aplay or alsaplayer to play an
audio file I get no sound output too.

You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
however, 'dmesg' shows no complaints either:

question: is the prefix 'smp_' suspicious? something to do with the
kernel ?

/dev/audio: no such device
what's going wrong? could it have to do with shared interrupts? am i
missing something?
i should add that i have the same problem when using a kernel without
built-in sound and loading modules by hand. 'alsa' did not do any good
either.

I have a HP Omnibook XE3 GF which also uses the i830 chipset.
The i830 is not natively supported with acceleration by XFree86 prior to
version 4.2. Debian currently ships with 4.1, so you won't have
accelerated support, but you can use the frame

After Kernel 2.4..2 the notebook hung when i tried to suspend it, tired to
