may be just as easy to add the noauto option to the fstab line. This
is generally the case for cd-rom drives, so that you don't attempt to
mount an empty drive at boot time.

address? That could be a configuration problem, or you might not have a
dhcp client installed. If you could post the error message, and perhaps
the relevant line(s) from /etc/network/interfaces that would help.

If you are using the 2.4 kernel from a clean install I would expect it
to have devfs support. I didn't know that you could do a linux install
without it. I think something is a bit amiss here. Could you post the
exact error message you recieved with a bit of context?
