An upgrade of the bios (AMI) from version 1.01 to version 1.11 solved
the problem. Thanks for your help.

I wonder if there are any ideas/recommendations/pointers to install
sid or sarge in this machine. I have made X work with vesa driver, the
problems that i have so far are:
* no sound (altec lansing), alsoconf from sarge didnt see any sound
card, will try next sid's version.

The problem most likely is that support for your IDE controller is not
built into the kernel. This a problem I have encountered several times
and it is quite annoying. If the controller drivers are not built into
the kernel, you can not enable DMA. I wish someone would fix this bu

I decided to add the logs.
Let me remention my problem. I have a Mitac 5021 laptop that has woody
installed. I installed the base system and xserver-xfree86 and icevm.
Whenever the x server tries to run i got a SetVBE error. So i couldt
get the icewm running.
