The problem most likely is that support for your IDE controller is not built into the kernel. This a problem I have encountered several times and it is quite annoying. If the controller drivers are not built into the kernel, you can not enable DMA. I wish someone would fix this bu they currently have not. Compile and pack a custom kernel and then install it. That should fix your problem.
