It sounds like it's using a framebuffer display, and not doing it
gracefully. The framebuffer for some video cards is just not that
mature yet, unfortunately, so if you don't need it, you can disable it
and get a nice text display. If you do ne

You're right, it doesn't work on my notebook either.
It worked fine on my old pc, though.
It's a shame that it doesn't work on new LCDs...

May i suggest installing the "suggested" software packages for xserver-xfree86
(that is, run "apt-get install discover mdetect read-edid")
which are for graphics board detection, mouse detection, monitor
detection - then run "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" which hopefully
will select the correct

You use the wrong resolution for your display.

Hi,
This sounds like the same problem that's been cropping up with other
laptop users lately.
A laptop LCD, unlike a conventional CRT (desktop) display, is basically
a
fixed resolution device. For example, my laptop's 14.1" display ha
Hi all--
I just set my laptop up with sid and unofficial X 4.2.0 debs. The
computer is a HP Omnibook 6100 with a 15-inch screen. I tried the VESA
driver first, and it acted as if it was on a 14-inch screen. Perfectly
visible and crisp display, just an annoying black border of dark
pixels.
So I up

I want to run linux on not-very-fast machine (Pentium-1 class, not-so-much

What configuration requires more resourses (mostly RAM, also CPU),
X_SVGA (or similar) server or framebuffer + X_FBDEV server ?
What configuration is lighter, faster?
I am interested mostly in 3.3.6 version, info a

Damon,
Using X version 3.x for that card is gonna be a pain. I'd suggest
using 4.1 and get the custom Savage chip from here
(http://www.probo.com/timr/savagemx.html). They have a version for 3.x and

There is Linux-Laptop HOWTO.
It recommends using "noflushd" instead of "updated".

Hi
it could be that you are using a journalling filesystem like ext3 or
reiserfs, 'cause those are writting to disk every 5 sec or so...
I haven't found out how to make it write to disk a little less often, but if
anybody know how, I would like to hear about it!!

access with timestamp, file (well if it doesn't work at filesystem
