Now I don't understand this. Once an HPA has been created, it will be
hidden by the drive unless the kernel or BIOS specifically overrides
this. It does not depend on the kernel to detect and implement the HPA

I am building a recovery/diagnostic debian-live "live CD". It is a
lenny build with kernel 2.6.26-2-486.
I really want to use hdparm as in:
#hdparm -N p${lbaend} --yes-i-know-what-i-am-doing /dev/hda
but I get this error:

needed to allow hdparm to issue the Secure Erase command to ATA hard
