I have the same experiences with MEPIS 3.3 (KDE3.3)

My computer has an ALI5451-based sound card, PCI ID 10b9:5451. With the
2.6.7 kernel, the snd-ali5451 driver worked perfectly for me; with 2.6.8,
programs appear to be able to access the sound card but no sound comes out.
