on 2.6 ones, i believe. initramfs-tools and yaird default to initramfs format, but could probably generate cramfs or ext2 just as well. And initrd requires pivot_root to chain to the root system.  On an initramfs, a pivot_root will crash it.  You need to do a move mount instead. Tks, Jeff
