Perhaps remarkable is that the "system" part of the time output is
relatively high: real 1m40.895s user 1m26.253s sys 0m14.641s is the
result on the xeon dual core machine.

I know... Without any additional option it was the same behaviour.
In the past, APIC and ACPI sometimes made trouble.

kernel. No virtual machines are running.
The machine is an IBM X3550 with Dual Core Xeon 5050.
The kernel options are noapic and acpi=off. I hope, somebody have
ideas...
