Someone who really understands how these packages work together should
write a brief summary, and if that doesn't lead to code changes, I'm
willing to write a documentation patch against whatever package it makes
sense.

Manoj, don't you think you should indicate in your package if
development of Debian kernels and kernel-package has so much diverged
that it gets hard for you to keep them working together (it seems you
don't get support on this from the kernel-package maintainers...)

So the first thing that's missing is the file Module.symvers, later on
also scripts/genksyms/genksyms is missing. Both seem to deal with
modversions. Any idea which target I need to call to get that?
Well, that was the default mechanism.
Are you kidding? Why should one compile the complete kernel, when all I
need are some third-party modules?
