Tried with both open source radeon driver and fglrx (package
version 1:10-11-1 from experimental either).
I also noted that thinkpad_acpi module in 2.6.36 kernel does
have acpi support for Lenovo x100e laptop and this may be
the reason why it is working there.

I found my laptop Lenovo x100e to be freezing when running.
Here are some details that I found out regarding the freeze:
It looks to be happening only when the display is powered off. E.g. it
