Thank you for the answer attempts, Frederick and Svenn. I wonder if the
following behaviour is related:
I notice that there is on all my PCs (very)
usive. Therefore re the above (last points): Are these bugs or not
and if so, should anybody hear about them (other than readers here)? My
interest is whether I can recommend Debian yet to beginners. This would be
the case if the installer had installed kdm and found the correct x-driver
and
t was recommended.
Can anybody tell me how to get kdm working? Where is the crucial config file,
or is it easier to remove kdm and install it again?

it's a kind of bug. I had a similar problem with a (now longer
up-to-date) Sarge. I found the solution on the internet somewhere but have
lost and forgotten it. I think it was simply to install packages called zip
and unzip (maybe also one or two others).

I just did a fresh Debian Sarge install and seem to have missed the

That's funny, I don't have it either in Debian Testing, even though kdesu is
installed. I do have a man page for kdesu-stub which only has one line:
kdesu_stub fixme.

Thanks everybody for the help. I want to solve this once and for all. At the
moment I have to wait ten minutes, then I can mount manually only one of my

if it is included and correctly configured in /etc/fstab.

Incidently, cat /proc/partitions won't show the SD card *until it has already
been pmounted*. It is thus not useful to determine unknown partitions.

For the above to work properly, you may need a kernel newer than 2.6.11
If you can install udev and hal, the above may work automatically, not
requiring pmount.
Good sumup?

few distributions (e.g. Kunbuntu) seem to have gotten this right,
certainly not Sarge.
I note that even 3) isn't true automounting, so maybe there is a 4).
My personal solution is to forget about USB-mounting in my Debian system

then neither does udev.
hal seems to depend on udev, but I still havn't got a clue what all
these components *really* do.

eventually be solved by a an update. My solution for the meantime is to
use an old version of Knoppix with 2.4 kernel to write CDs, where it

Now what I really want is a KDE-type tool with the power of rsync.
