This also just happened to me two days ago without a system crash. Affected was kmail and the KDE desktop settings. In kmail the file /home/user/.kde/share/config/kmailrc was corrupted (the account info had been replaced by some mangled mails). It was quickly solved by overwriting with the same file from a backup.
