Today I had an idea for smoothly migrating to KDE 4:
I backup my ~/.kde and just use my KDE 4 Debian Sid/Experimental
virtualbox and mount my home directory via vboxfs. KDE 4 should use .kde4
in my home directory and then I could migrate the configuration of KDE
applications one by one, s

Just as a warning cause I lost a mail I took over one hour to write. I
copied it to kwrite to preserve the mail text without the hard linefeeds
that KMail usually added when sending the mail. On trying to hover on save
menu entry I also hovered on recent files => kaboom and mail lost.

happening often, possibly always when I start Kontact for the first time
after starting a KDE session. On further starts of Kontact it works as
expected:

Again, AFAIK, kmail does not use Akonadi in KDE 4.4, it might in KDE 4.5.
Its KAddressBook that uses Akonadi by default now
