And it definately rocks! I upgraded yesterday. At first I was quite disappointed cause my ThinkPad T42 with Linux kernel 2.6.29.2 and TuxOnIce 3.0.1 crashed hard on every attempt to activate OpenGL compositing. Upgrading xserver-xorg-video- radeon from 1:6.9.0-1+lenny4 from Lenny to 1:6.12.2-2 from Sid helped. EXA acceleration still tends to bring the X server into consuming all unused CPU cycles, but with XAA KDE 4.2.2 works stably with Open GL compositing to far. Beside that Kontact had all my valuable personal data. All the applications I tried migrated their configurations nicely. Basket while still a KDE 3 applications works, too. Since I had a stable X.org setup with X.org 7.4, X-Server 1.6.1 and xf86radeon 6.12.2 I remember no crash of any KDE applications. It works quite polished and stable to me. I guess I will find issues with longer use time, but well I know bugs.kde.org and I am pretty confident it will get better and better. So thank you very much to the whole Debian KDE 4 packaging team. And of course to the KDE development team itself. Thank you Debian for waiting this long before replacing KDE 3. I had a glimpse at earlier KDE 4 versions and I think other distributions adopted them to earlier - OTOH you could have installed KDE 3 and 4 in parallel there. I also installed Amarok 2. Now not only my multimedia ThinkPad T23 above my hi-fi equipment but also my production laptop is using KDE 4.2.2. Kaboom did not make complete backup of ~/.kde to ~/kde3-backup tough. Like on my other notebook it showed some errors with files that the rsync that I did manually before upgrading copied just fine. I think I have made a shot of that made with my digital camera.
