I did an apt-get source licq on sid
and it seems that the debian maintainer uses --enable-kde for the qt-plugin
configure script instead of --with-kde
that's why the current licq doesn't support kde

No the debian maintainer of licq decided to enable kde support for the qt
plugin of licq which does make sense.
may be there should be two packages qt-plugin(without kde support) and
kde-plugin(qt plugin with kde support) so that everybody is happy

however in order to remove XFT support just set QT_XFT to 0
and then konsole will work with standard fonts and won't look ugly
if you unset QT_XFT then crash occurs as mentioned above

Forget about having it working for kde 2.2.2 with the new gphoto2 you need to
change the code quite a bit. It is far from being a trivial patch.
