on the performance side, remember that the aa enabled qt version (2.3) is still beta and may be not optimized concerning font lookup.(try to remove some fonts from your installation, for me I have ~40 fonts and it is fine). It might well be a problem in the font server also. I think I remember a discussion on this topic on kde-core-devel (keith packard and someone else) concerning performances, true types fonts and the way to have a list of all of them.
