You can write your own plugin for Kopete pretty easily using the pipes plugin.
Pipe the incoming messages through your own script and render HTML.
I wrote a plugin to write messages upside down using this method [1], you
would probably need to extend that to cope with richtext input.

I was wondering whether there was any sort of Kopete plugin or other method
to tweak the app into rendering BBCode? It's aesthetically unpleasing to
have to bear with the millions of formatiing tags used by certain ladies
(and some men as well, to be fair) in my msn contact list...
