Thanks, you pointed me in the right direction! The culprit seems to be the Swarm screen saver. It doesn't activate on my system (even though it works when testing it in the system settings). All other screen savers do work, and lock screen does correctly restart them when the unlock dialog disappears. I will file a bug against the swarm screensaver in kscreensaver.
