Given sten's lead, I've attempted to adapt a "minimal" patch that
implements pcre2 support in a merge request[1]. The patch is still
large (~700 LOC) but it's strictly targeted on adding pcre2 support and
adapted from an upstream branch/fork. The details of the patch
