I've also ran into this problem.
I had nvidia-kernel-source up to date but "m-a" did not try to
actually rebuild the source when I chosed "build" in the menu.
It flickered a bit and after 0.5s said "ok ready". This was most
probably due to the fact that I had
nvidia-kernel-2.6.22-2-amd64_
> nvidia-glx: Depends: nvidia-kernel-100.14.11 but it is not installable
Build it from nvidia-kernel-source
Using module-assistant is the easiest way.
