Further detail: Only "Save asW is affected. "Save" is OK, does not complain about format and retains original file name extension.

I have discovered a workaround. KDE Settings > Applications > File Associations Search for jpeg in the filename pattern. The Filename Patterns in the results bog starts with *.jpe What happens, I wondered, if I click Remove and Accept? What happens is that Gwenview no longer defaults to offer
