I have discovered a workaround. KDE Settings > Applications > File Associations
Search for jpeg in the filename pattern. The Filename Patterns in the results bog starts with *.jpe What happens, I wondered, if I click Remove and Accept?What happens is that Gwenview no longer defaults to offering .jpe as the default Save as type and the problem goes away.
