Would it make sense to give write permission to a group like plugdev
(or create a hiddev group?), so a user who is in the group can write
without sudo/suid-root?
I would like to avoid sudo/suid-root on the setup tool, because of
security ;)

if you have the eeprom module loaded, the computer will crash on
starting X (not on loading nvidia module). the attached patch from the
nvnews forum will deactivate the smbus funktion in the driver, and it
won't crash anymore.

I'm using the init.d script from Russell Stuart[1], to start my
ipw3945d. It works very well, because it uses the original Intel
scripts.
In my eyes starting a deamon over init.d is the "best" way, but I hope
you will be able to choose the best way for _this part
