I had the same error as post before me but interesting in the xsession
errors log there was also complaint about missing ssl cert. Installing
'ca-certificates' appears to have fixed the issue (after re logout/login)

I don't know, I usually just leave ondemand do it's work without
interfering.
The attached version of debian/patches/home.diff fixes the segfaults
on amd64. As Aurelien suggests, someone probably should tackle the
real underlying issues with $HOME, but this at least fixes the
immediate issue.
