I'm getting this behaviour with squeeze's version 1.23-3.
After downloading tar's debian sources from sid with apt-get,
applying the patch, building with debuild and installing with
dpkg --install, tar doesn't crash anymore, ...
but now I have bug #604394

I have the same problem after installing 1.25-2 with the
patch proposed in bug #604698, running in squeeze.
The version of tar in squeeze had bug #604698, so I have
downgraded to the version in lenny.
The version 1.20-1+lenny1 in lenny installs well in squeeze
and works as expected.
