I have manually backported it, and added some variable that was missing
from it; that said, the changes are already integrated and should be

running, then when I resume the VM I get the odd blank area in the upper

I believe the emacs-goodies-el package will accept random bits of Emacs
add-ons from elsewhere in the world, particularly if someone gives the
maintainers updates as they show up.
