happens only because the packages are being removed, and apt removed some
packages in an order that was not consistent with the declared dependencies.

I seem to be experiencing a similar issue.
after upgrading in the last week, it seems that gnome-volume-manager
stopped mounting my firewire harddisk automatically on the desktop. I
