Just to point out that the above GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1 method of invocation is
just a work around. The real fix has to be in Emacs23 and how it
deals with client side
windows. The link below points to a little more information.

Got this from #Emacs on Freenode. Calling emacs in the following way
fixes the problem:
bash% export GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS=1
bash% emacs &
Before doing that, the Lisp Interaction menu was empty and the Buffers
menu would not show
any open buffers, only a couple of buffers that opened up emacs

After upgrade testing today from 2.16.6 emacs23 (gtk) menu don't work
properly. The buffers selection doens't work at all and editing .tex files with
auctex package istalled the menus doesn't work too.
