I've added the following paragraph to the e2fsck man page:
Note that in general it is not safe to run e2fsck on mounted filesys-
tems. The only exception is if the -n option is specified, and -c, -l,
or -L options are _not_ specified. However, even if it is safe to do
so

fsck -fnc /dev/whatever does not honor the -n flag; instead, it will
actually restore the journal. (I didn't wait to see what else it will
do.)
While there *is* a warning about doing fsck on a mounted filesystem,
