A patch was posted by Nikos Chatzimpontozis at that same thread which is
reported to fix the error (in libatalk/vfs/ea.c).
This patch has been committed to trunk by Frank Lahm but 2.2.1 was already out.
Could this patch be applied to the Squeeze release?

does not (by default) do so either. Because there is no pidfile, the
initscript stop command does not function.

I switched to the etchnhalf kernel as advised. The error still occurs
