Hi Simon
This is embarassing but I found now what was the issue. There is one
package that I installed some months ago that was not from Debian
repos and for some reason it installs /lib/libusb. It's not even a
deb file which is why dpkg-query does not know about it.

t-coffee program, and it's t-coffee that is failing on its own.

I have attached a git patch which adds a quilt patch to the repos.
This change inlines the DTDs in the xml files and pdebuild now
succeeds.
If this change fixes it for debian, we can apply it upstream.

I can't open and analyse 16-bit images. Please build with
quantum-depth=16. Octave can't open them as it uses graphicsmagick and
for scientific equipment, 16-bit images are a must. Thanks in advance,
