I have discovered that the root cause of this error is any pam module writing
to stderr.

I built and tested the 0.5.7 release, which includes this patch, and it fixes
the issue.
I would like to point out that this bug makes it difficult to run many scripts
against network mounts that apply any kind of additional permissions. In our
case we are using the 'all_squash' option

I created a Debian 6 VM using libvirt/qemu/kvm on a Debian 6 host.
After switching the video device to 'vmvga' I noticed random hard locks (about
once a day) in the VM. Once this happens you can not even
shutdown/destroy the VM using the 'virsh' command. I had
