It is a feature. lftp considers `Connection refused' a temporary error
and retries the operation.
To avoid it, use `set net:max-retries 1'.
Besides, lftp connects (and re-connects) to the server only when needed, in
your case when you want a directory listing. That's a feature too.

I should also mention that it works on the same machine in a 32-bit chroot,
so it's pretty clearly a 64-bit issue.

I have similar troubles here with cssh and fvwm too.
Attached are my .csshrc, output from cssh -dDG dalton, and the .fvwm2rc
file I'm using (in case the placement policy matters).
Note that only 5 hosts out of 6 do work. But the 6 hosts _are_ up !
