Do busybox provde getent? 'getent hosts $hostname' might work.

It would be nice for the installer to generate a preseed file with all of
the other installation files in /var/log/installer. I find that a lot of the
boxes I build wind up being cookie cutter or at least similar enough that I
wind up adapting
