Some more information. I have now tried the install with the rc1 netinst cd. I works like a charm with the 2.6 kernel and I now have a fully working workstation machine. The correct modules are loaded and the SATA disk is recognized as a SCSI disk via the libata interface. With the 2.4 kernel the
